What are those so-called "alignments" of Route 66?

An alignment is simply a version of Route 66 as it existed at a given time. It’s just a road that at one time was Route 66.

In any given location, there might be multiple alignments you can still drive today. Some of these changes in alignments happened for very short sections, while others ran for many miles. E.g. there are 2 widely differing alignments south of Springfield, IL.
